The Institute of Physics publishes more than 70 academic journals and magazines and maintains a large database of open access journals for their 50,000 worldwide members.
They also offer their members access to a complete back catalogue of over 700,000 articles. Traditionally, publishers would store back copies of journals, resulting in high inventory and considerable administration costs.
Hobbs and the IOP jointly undertook a project scoping exercise which resulted in a fully costed system proposal for a bespoke print on demand solution.
This was implemented by Hobbs using our team of in-house developers. In addition to the benefits to IOP’s customers, it was important that the revenues and internal cost savings justified the system implementation.
Provision of service
Hobbs have created a dedicated, branded ordering portal which seamlessly integrates with the IOP website. Printing and shipping costs are calculated automatically by the system in realtime.
On receipt of confirmation of payment, Hobbs create a bespoke cover for the publication using appropriate author and article titles taken from the article’s associated metadata.
The new system has been very successful with many repeat orders and satisfied end users. IOP have realised significantly reduced administration time and cost savings.
Additionally, the system provides IOP with a complete audit trail from order to delivery. This ensures excellent efficiency and peace of mind for the IOP team.
